Works under general supervision, performs supervisory and lead work in the installation and maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection facilities. Plans, organizes, coordinates, and participates in the work of water and sewer maintenance crew; coordinates priorities with the Public Works Director; leads and participates in the installation and repair of water and sewer main systems and the making of water and sewer taps; leads and supervises the installation and maintenance of fire hydrants and water valves; builds manholes and performs related cement work; establishes the location of valves, lines, and meters; supervises the flushing and cleaning of sewer mains; repairs or replaces pumps; trains and instructs subordinate personnel as to safety precautions and procedures and the proper performance of their job; completes and maintains accurate records as to personnel, materials, equipment, and time spent per job; patches utility cuts; may make general plumbing repairs; performs other duties as required.  Drives utility vehicle and uses, tamp, sewer rodding machine, wet tap machine, air compressor, shovel, hand tools, and other equipment as required.  This position reports to the Public Works Director. Graduation from a high school. Ability to train, coordinate, and supervise subordinate personnel; ability to read, interpret, and follow sketches, blueprints and maps; ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to maintain accurate materials and work reports; ability to deal courteously and tactfully with public; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and the public; good physical condition. Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's license, Class A required with air brake endorsement. Experience in water and sewer line maintenance and installation work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; must have a Class C Distribution Certification and be able to obtain Class B within a year.
